An explanation of SEO and having a good understanding of how SEO works would not be complete without understanding first how search engines work. In a nutshell, a search engines goals are to deliver the best content and web pages based on any given search query.

To do this, search engines crawl nearly all web pages and websites that are public, and they index them in a quickly accessible database. This database is an instance of all web pages. It then uses an algorithm to calculate relevancy and importance based on each search query.

So what is the goal of an SEO?

It’s understandable that SEO or search engine optimization can get confusing pretty quickly. Yes, the general Idea of SEO seems simple enough, but how does it work? How is it related to search engines? What do you have to do to increase your SEO and rankings? Since we are a local SEO firm in Roseville, we often hear these questions quite a bit.

Put simply, the goal and thus actions of SEO are to prove relevancy of websites (or webpages) to Google and the other main search engines. We do this first and foremost by optimizing the content and creating the content that serves the users. Though there is much more to the SEO story than this, this is the most important part. It is not just about keywords (though they do have a big role in SEO). It is more about consumer psychology and creating content and value that pleases the users.

It’s all about the users. We must build a foundation that serves the users. But, there’s also need to optimize the content that helps the search engine bots and the Google algorithms, which are essentially computer algorithms based on mathematical equations.

This is why SEO is both an art and science. It is that fine line between serving People and computer bots.

SEO, or search engine optimization, is a practice that optimizes and helps push search engine rankings and traffic up.

A job as an SEO (search engine optimizer) is to do anything that will prove relevancy of the website/ webpage, to the search engines algorithms. Since search engines are based on mathematical algorithms, SEO is just fulfilling an equation.

The SEO problem: The issue is that Google and the other main search engines don’t publicly disclose the algorithms or what makes them tick. That is why the SEO community has to interpret what factors are most important in SEO.

The search engines are getting much better at determining what websites are relevant, so as someone who does SEO, the job becomes much more challenging these days because you must make that site relevant! Back in the old days, you could fake it. Now, you really must add value and optimize after the value is there. There aren’t as many tricks you can do anymore like you used to be able to do back in the early days of SEO.

How to succeed with SEO, with the basics

When clients visit our office here in Roseville, Ca they often ask us what the main factors that make SEO work are? It can get pretty complicated pretty quickly, but here are some of the basics of SEO, so you can wrap your brain around what SEO is all about. Just remember that this

  • Focus on the user: craft your content and websites for users first and foremost (Don’t deceive your users)
  • Add value: Create web pages and websites that are very useful to the users
  • Create Outstanding Content: Published great informational content
  • Create LOTS of Outstanding Content: posting a lot of content also helps show your authority
  • Make Content User-Friendly: The better your writing is, the easier and more enjoyable it is for your audience to read. Make sure it is not glaring with grammar errors or poorly written sentences.
  • Make Content Bot Friendly: in your HTML markup, you want to make sure that your header tags and title tags, along with your ALT attributes are accurate and descriptive.
  • Good Website Design: have a well-designed website
  • Fast website design: make sure your website is not slow loading
  • Good Website Architecture: Though this can get complex, just remember to link your web pages together in a user-friendly hierarchy (remember if you have a web page without any other web page linking to it, the crawlers won’t build the find it. Learn to love links!)
  • Focus On Keywords: For example, keyword rich URLs and H Tags can help provide relevancy to the search engine bots. Your URLs should include relevant keywords, and they should be short and easy to remember for humans.
  • Avoid duplicate content: you don’t want any two articles in your website to have the same content. You also don’t want multiple versions of one web page (which is natural) to appear to Google to be duplicate content. To prevent Google from viewing multiple versions of one of your web pages at the Bukit content you can use rel=”canonical” HTML markup in your web page, or you can use 301 redirects. These methods will essentially let Google know that there is only one version of that particular web page, and any other version of your web page is not duplicate content. For example, if you have an SSL on your site you will have HTTPS and HTTP versions of web pages. If you place the rel=”canonical” in the HTML of your original web page, it will view that as the original and will not see any other HTTP or HTTPS versions at the content.
  • Consistent content: The “freshness” of your website or blog can have a dramatic effect on search engine rankings. You want to produce fresh content regularly. As they say, content is king, and without continually creating content, how can you be king?
  • Earn Links: Natural, nonspammy links can add a lot of power to any SEO campaign. In Google’s eyes, Links mean that others view you as relevant, and they help build your authority in your niche. This intern potentially helps you rank better for almost all of your other keywords.
  • BE PATIENT AND CONSISTENT: These two pieces of advice are incredibly valuable for any SEO campaign. Every SEO campaign is different. Some will rank quicker and easier, while others may take a lot of time to show results. This is normal. You must realize that SEO is not a short-term game. Depending on your niche or industry, you may see results fairly quickly, or you may see results after implementing all the above over time. In general, though SEO is a long-term strategy that will pay off in strides if you commit to it.
